A single-grain bulk high temperature superconductor RE-Ba-Cu-O (RE: rare earth elements) with large critical current density (J_c) values can exhibit a large electromagnetic force through the interaction with magnetic fields. Large magnetic fields over several Tesla can also be trapped by such high J_c bulk superconductors. Many practical applications have been proposed using bulk RE-Ba-Cu-O superconductors and some prototypes have already been developed. In this article, we summarize the present status of the applications for bulk high temperature superconductor RE-Ba-Cu-O.
