Superconducting motors with YBCO bulk material reach high output power at low size. The motors are operating in liquid nitrogen. The stator is conventional, the reluctance rotor consists of iron and YBCO filling the gaps. The superconductors increase the edge effect which is responsible for a high torque. Several test motors have been built. 10 kW at 3000 rpm / 50 Hz have been reached, corresponding to a high rotor force density of 6 N/cm~2 which exceeds best conventional values. A theoretical model has been developed which is used for a discussion of the values obtained.
