A brief description of the mechanical setup, and control and software architecture of Romeo together its exploitation during the XIII Italian Expedition to Antarctica is given in this paper. Romeo is the latest Unmanned Underwater Vehicle developed at C.N.R.-I.A.N. for marine science applications and research on intelligent vehicles. During the XIII Italian Expedition to Antarctica (24 October 1997-24 February 1998) it has been exploited for collecting data about under-ice biological processes, testing under-ice performances of a set of acoustic devices for autonomous navigation and guidance. and collecting benthic data in a sea area free of ice.
