The quarry, mining and civil engineering industries need new production methods to improve rock excavation, give higher recovery rates, reduce unwanted or over fracturing during blasting and reduce drilling and explosive costs. The primary objective of this, a three year project funded under the European Commissions BRITE Euram programme, is to carry out research to demonstrate that abrasive water suspension jet based rock working systems can give substantial economic, safety, health and environmental benefits to these industries. Twenty-one months into the project this paper highlights the significant findings of the project, which have proven the technical and economic feasibility of the technology.
