A novel optical fibre-based sensing scheme for conducting simultaneous strain and temperature measurements is discussed, using an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (EFPI) strain sensor coupled to a rare-earth doped fibre fluorescence decay-time based temperature sensor embedded in a carbon fibre reinforced composite system. Results illustrating the sensor system performance are presented and evaluated
