Colored zirconia ceramics for dental applications

The objective of this study was to develop colored zirconia ceramics for restorative dentistry as an alternative to porcelains or glass-ceramics. The three iron oxide Fe_2O_3, cerium oxide CeO_2 and bismuth oxide Bi_2O_3 were selected as coloring additives and a large palette of tooth colors was produced. The physico-chemical properties of colored zirconias appear similar to that of the original zirconia ceramic. The coating of a zirconia core by veneers was also examined. No marked reaction at the zirconia core-veneer interface was detected and the fracture strength of the coated zirconia core remained unchanged.
