Tissue response to anti-washout apatite cement in the premaxialla of a rat

The anti-washout apatite cement (aw-AC) sets within approximately 5-6 min to form hydroxyapatite without crumbling, even when the cement paste is immersed in fluid immediately after mixing. Although aw-AC has good potential value to be a good candidate as biomaterials aimed at the reconstruction of bone defects, only a limited study has been done so far, and no study has been done with respect to the tissue response to aw-AC in the palatal region. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the tissue response to aw-AC when used for filling in bone defects in the palatal region and the course of healing of bone defects, compared with teh conventional apatite cement (c-AC). Bone defect was made in the premaxiila of a rat with a round bar, filled with AC, and evaluated histologically. We found no inflammatory reactions in the surrounding areas of bone in the case of aw-AC and the bone defect was covered with new bone. In contrast, c-AC eaused inflammatory reactions in the area surrounding the cement filling and the degree of bone regeneration was poor. We conclude that aw-AC is superior to c-AC in biocompatibility, and, therefore, is a useful material for filling in bone defects.
