Wear characteristics of explanted alumina-alumina hip prostheses

The wear of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and the resulting wear debris induced osteolysis is still one of the major problems facing modern total hip arthroplasty. As a result there has been renewed interest in alternate bearing materials for hip prostheses.
