Calcium phosphate cements: Chemistry and Applications

The concept of calcium phosphates as possible dental restorative materials was first presented to the research community in 1982 [LeGeros et al.]. Since the development in 1987 [Brown and Chow] of the first self-hardening calcium phosphate cement (CPC) consisting of tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) or dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), this class of materials have been a subject of considerable interest in biomaterials research. A recent survey of the literature [Chow et al., 1998] shows that there are more than 130 scientific publications and an even greater number of published abstracts on CPC's and closely related systems.
