Tissue engineering is an evolving discipline based on principles of biology, biomaterials and engineering. Tissue engineering is the science of design and manufacture of new tissues for the functional restoration of impaired organs and lost parts due to trauma and tumors. The three principal ingredients for tissue engineering are morphogenetic signals, responding stem cells and extracellular matrix scaffolding. Bones and teeth is mineralized extracellular matrix containing tissues. The mineral phase, hydroxyapatite is a bioceramic. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are morphogens with affinity to hydroxyapatite and collagens. In view of this bioceramics are ideal delivery systems for BMPs in the field of tissue engineering of bones and teeth including periodontium.
