Preliminary in vivo evaluation of synthetic calcium phosphate materials

Hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium posphate ( beta -TCP) are two commercially available calcium phosphate materials presently used as bone grafts. The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the biocompatibility and biodegradation of calcium phophate preparations differing in composition: calcium deficient apatite (dAP), ceramic hydroxyapatite (HA), carbonate hydroxyapatite (CHA), fluoride-substituted apatite (FA), and magnesium-substitutedtricalciumphosphate ( beta -TCMP). The materials were prepared and characterized using x-ray diffraction and infrared absorption spectroscopy and biologicaly through in-vivo implantation in muscles and femural diaphyses of 2 rabbits. After 30 and 60 days, the implants were retrieved, fixed in 4percent formaldheyde and processed for the histological and electron microscopic evaluations. The sections were microradiographed and observed under optical and scanning electron microscope with an x-ray microprobe.
