Calcium phosphate materials have been clinically applied in many areas of dentistry and orthopaedics. Bulk material, available in dense and porous forms is used for alveolar ridge augmentation, immediate tooth root replacement and maxillofacial reconstruction (Aoki 1977; Nery 1978; Metsger 1982; de Groot 1983). However, because calcium phosphate bulk materials are mechanically weak, they cannot be subjected to physiological loads as encountered in the skeleton. Therefore, calcium phosphate coatings on metallic substrates have been developed, which are currently used in loaded situations, like total joint replacements and dental root implants.
