In this paper we discuss the evaluation of a novel, self-setting bioactive composite cement with properties significantly exceeding those of PMMA. This new cement, a hybrid of bioactive graft materials and polymer composites, was evaluated physically, mechanically, and histologically relative to PMMA. Safety and biocompatability of the cement were also established. Superior mechanical properties and generation of bone on the surface of the composite creates a tough, stable, chemically bonded bone-composite interface. Rabbit histology reveals bone-cement bonding and interdigitation. This initial evaluation leads to the justification for the use of this composite in orthopaedics.
