We attempted to improve blood compatibility of silica-alumina composite powders synthesized through solgel processing due to addition of calcium phosphate, coating with poly-hydorxy-ethyl-methacylate (PHEMA). Blood compatibility of the powders was evaluated by measuring coagulation parameters i.e., partial thromboplastin time (PTT), prothrombin time (PT) and amount of fibrin (Fib), when contacted with fresh healthy human serum. Optimum compositions were in the range of SiO_2/Al_2O_3 = 5/5 approx 7/3 of mass ratios with 5 approx 10 wtpercent of calcium phosphate. PHEMA coating remarkably improved blood compatibility of the silica-alumina powders even with low concentration. Moreover, linear correlation was discovered between PTT values and optical absorption intensity of peak in the visible region (515 nm) of 1,1-diphenyl 2-picryhydrazil(DPPH)/methanol solution that is added to serum. This phenomenon proposes a new method for evaluating the blood compatibility.
