Many aqueous wastes emanating in the chemical industry have high concentrations of inorganic species (acids, bases, metal slts), and are contaminated with low levels of highly toxic organic molecules. The Extractive Mebrane Biroeactor (EMB) overcomes these problems by first of all extracting the toxic organics from the wastewater into a separate aqueous "biomedium" phase, and then biodegrading them in this biomedium where conditions are maintained for optimal biomass growth (1). This is possible since inorganic species (acids, basis, charged ions or catalyst moecules) are not able to cross the membrane; only the organic materials to the destroyed enter this biomedium zone.
