Birkhofer (3) in his paper presented in 1986 outlined possible future developments for low wattage metal halide lighting systems. These developments were expressed as economy and design requirements. The majority of these features, quantified in Table 1 for a 150W lamp, are provided by the new generation of metal halide lamps with ceramic arctubes. Future developments will include colour temperatures other than 3000K and extending lamp life. Hot re-ignition will remain a severe technical challenge because of the thermal characteristics of metal halide discharges in ceramic arctubes.
