Thermohydrological laboratory tests- insights into processes and behavior

Results of an experimental investigation visually examining phenomena occurring in partially-saturated fractures subjected to boilling temperatures are presented.Liquid flowed in films,intermittent rivulets,and continuous rivulets.Boiling,condensation,dry-out zone preferential flow of liquid in superheated regions; capillary-driven flow; film flow; and heat-pipe processes were observed.Rapid evaporation events,in which a volume of liquid superheats and suddenly evaporates,were frequently observed.
