The hydrological impact of the use of backfill on the thermal/hydrological response of heat-generating high-level waste is assessed.The TOUGS2 code is utilized to perform a sensitivity analysis of various hydrological parameters of backfill.Backfill porosity,permeability,and van Genuchten parameters P_o and m are examined.properly engineered backfill would provide a significant capillary barrier to moisture transport to waste packages.Backfill would be expected to prevent and/or minimize condensate drainage.
