Basic requirements for successful public involvements in siting contentious facilties

A project was carried out for the Swedish Radiation Protection Institute (SSI) between September 1996 and June 1997 which examined techniques of public involvement in Canada and the United States.Face to face meetings with a broad spectrum of stakeholders were carried out in each country,to gain insight into the successes and failures encountered.The lessons learned were then applied to the evolving situation in Sweden for siting a repository for spent nuclear fuel.Some of the basic requirements for successful public involvement which were identified are described.
