The purpose of the "Hazard Index" is to provide quantitative estimates of the relative importance of the major "natural" and "engineered" Features,Events,and Processes (FEPs) in reducing the potential hazard due to spent fuel disposed at the candidate Yucca Mountain HLW facility.The Hazard Index (HI) used in this study is a purely hypothetical estimate of individual dose rate.The approach used is to artificially "turn off" all FEPs initially,then add successive FEPs(in as logical an order as possible) one at a time to gauge their contribution to the total Hazard Index reduction.The Total System Performance Assessment code IMARC,developed by Risk Engineering,Inc.for EPRI,was used to calculate the HI's.~1
