The laccase-catalysed reaction of commercially available lighnin like Kraft-lignin or lignosulfonate with nucleophilic compounds like glucose and its polymers is rather slow. Radioacity tracers are necessary to demonstrate the fact that these compounds actually resact with each other under these conditions. This rather recalcitrant behaviour of the lignin is problably owing to the fact that only few radicals are formed during this reaction which in addition are rather short lived so that almost no ESR-signal of phenoxy-radical can be detected during the raction of lignin with laccase.
