The Command Forces (CFOR) project is a part of the Synthetic Theater of War (STOW) 97 program, an Advanced Concept Technical Demonstration (ACTD) that is jointly sponsored by the United States Atlantic Command (USACOM) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The CFOR program has developed synthetic command entities that are capable of autonomously commanding computer generated forces (CGF) on the virtual battlefield. In the STOW97 ACTD, command entities were played at multiple echelons in multiple services; examples included representations of US Army battalion and company commanders, USMC rifle platoon commanders, and multi-service fixed and rotary wing aircraft pilots. This paper will discuss the simulation environment in which CFOR operated and the successes and difficulties encountered by the CFOR command entities in the execution of the ACTD. The future of the CFOR program and the potential for extension to other programs and applications will also be discussed.
