This paper describes an implementation of an evolutionary programming (EP) strategy with self-adaptation applied to the design of a helicopter rotor. We describe the behavior of our comprehensive rotor analysis code and illustrate why itis well suited for coupling with a nonderivative-based optimization scheme. We also show results from earlier gradient-based calculations and illustrate how we are creating a hybrid method of optimization that takes advantage of the best properties of each method. Both our gradient and EP strategies are implemented using a message passing paradigm which allows our codes to be run on a cluster of generic UNIX workstations or on a dedicated MPP, such as the IBM SP2.
