Erosion within a watercourse is a natural phenomenon which will continue until an equilibrium among velocity, channel geometry and other features is reached. This process is particularly significant in urbanizing areas. Man-made improvements often transfer rather than cure the problems. Control by the reduction of flow, thus velocity, will reduce erosion. Such control within urbanizing areas can best be implemented through detention ponds. The implementation of detention should also take into consideration social, environmental, and economic impacts. The performance of the control system should be verified through post-construction monitoring.
