Preface: Proceedings of the 11th Joint MMM-lntermag Conference, 18-22 January 2010, Washington, DC, USA

The 11th Joint MMM-lntermag Conference was held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, very close to the heart of Washington, DC. It was a very successful meeting with over 2,300 digests submitted, of which some 1,715 were accepted for presentation. As a consequence, the conference was also very well attended with 1,719 registered attendees, making it one of the largest MMM-lntermag Conferences on record and the largest ever organised in the United States. No meeting of this size can run without a major contribution from the community. In particular, the higher than usual number of digests submitted necessitated special arrangements for the Programme Committee. Because of the international nature of our conferences, we made sure that the Programme Committee was truly international. Three Programme Co-chairs were appointed with Hiroaki Muraoka of Tohoku University as the first among equals, Bernard Di-eny of CEA in Grenoble and Chris Leighton of the University of Minnesota ably supporting him. In this way we had full representation across the areas of the world where magnetism is studied. Further, the Programme Committee itself had approximately half its members from outside the United States. In fact, even this proved to be an underestimate as fewer than 30% of the presentations came from the United States. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Programme Committee who completed over 4,600 digest evaluations in a single weekend.
