A modified grid-based approach, master grid approach, is proposed in this study. The proposed technique constructs meshes by superimposing master grid over the object to be meshes, then taking internal cells of the grid as the elements, and finally modifying the rugged boundary with layers of surface elements. An extension of the grid-based approach is proposed to treat the geometry feature of domains with a number of symmetric planes using the irregular master grid. In order to verify the validity and effectiveness of the present technique, the finite element analyses of two metal forming processes are simulated using the developed mesh generator and the results and discussion are presented.
