The National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), in co-operation with the Portuguese Railways (CP), has developed a software system named "RECTIF" for the optimization of rail curves alignment. Recent developments have taken place in order to adapt the said system for installation at and interfacing with invehicle systems that control the works carried out along the rail track by tamping machines. A presentation is made of the most important issues dealt with in this process, the main characteristics of the system, and the results obtained following its installation and testing.
