OPERATING EXPERIENCE AT THE WABASH RIVER COAL GASIFICATION REPOWERING PROJECT

The Wabash River Coal GasificationRepowering Project (WRCGRP), a joint venture betweenDestec Energy, Inc., And PSI Energy, Inc., begancommercial operation in November of 1995. The Project,selected by the United States Department of Energy(DOE) under the Clean Coal Program (Round IV)represents the largest operating coal-gasificationcombined-cycle plant in the world. This demonstrationproject has allowed PSI Energy to repower a 1950svintage steam turbine and install a new syngas-firedcombustion turbine to provide 262 MW (net) ofelectricity in a clean, efficient manner in acommercial utility setting while utilizing locallymined high-sulfur Indiana bituminous coal. In doingso, the project is also demonstrating some noveltechnology while advancing the commercialization ofintegrated coal-gasification combined-cycletechnology. This paper will discuss the improvementsto the process and operations of the gasification andpower block as a result of experiences gained fromearly commercial operating experience of the Wabash Project.
