This paper presents a new algorithm for automated vehicle reidentification and travel time measurement on freeways using simple signature data. Our earlier work has demonstrated a one-to-one reidentification procedure using relatively long platoons, while this paper relaxes the platoon constraint. The new algorithm uses short platoons of 2 or 3 vehicles to narrow the reidentification to a small neighborhood, rather than an exact match. The algorithm is presented using effective vehicle lengths measured from existing speed traps, but it can easily be generalized to other signature based vehicle reidentification systems.
