Traction data were collected using a single wheel tester operating on a sandy loam soil in a ground level soil tank. A 495 R24 radial tyre was used. The single wheel tester was drawn by an 81 kW tractor that straddled the soil tank. Soil properties of cohesion, internal angle of friction and soil deformation modulus were measured using the tyre in situation and using a triaxial shear box. The main test wheel variables changed were the vertical tyre load, tyre pressure and the direction of the tread bars. Traction prediction was carried out using established equations based on soil and tyre properties. Empirical slip-pull curves agreed with the general form of standard equations. The direction of the tread bars made a significant difference to the thrust developed. More test data are required to evaluate the prediction error for the driven wheel.
