The aim of this paper is to clarify the mechanism of adhesion between clay and a solid surface. Two series of tests were conducted, the first was the tensile tests between clay and the surface of some solids and the other was between some solid material and a thin-water-film-on glass plate structure. The tested solid materials were PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) and some metals i.e. stainless steel, copper and aluminum. The clay used is saturated kaolin. As the result of these tests, it was dear that the relationship between the adhesive stresses and the weight of the soil that adhered to the material, could be reasonably explained in case of methods. On the other hand, the phenomena observed when using PTFE was slightly complex.
