The construction industry plays a leading role in the economic development of Japan, accounting for 16-17% of that country's GDP, a much larger figure than in the United States and Western Europe. The Japanese construction industry underwent rapid mechanization after World War II and was greatly influenced by technological developments in the U.S. Advances in the production of construction machinery go hand-in-hand with improvement of construction methods. These advancements and improvements will be increasingly promoted with consideration of the environment, automation, robotization, and ease of use by workers.
