Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a common disease to be seriously detrimental to the health of mild-old women. Menopausal bone loss is associated with disruption of cancellous bone microstructure which decrease the mechanical strength of bone and increase the risk of fracture. So far, the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis has not been fully understood yet. Thus, there is a great need to develop a suitable large animal model of osteoporosis for further studying the pathogenesis and for developing new drug to treat osteoporosis. We have established the goat model of osteoporosis by means of bilateral ovariectomy (OVX). Dual-energy X-ray absorptronmetry (DXA), histomorphometry and pathological morphology of skeleton, serum biochemical parameters, and bone biomechanical parameters were used to monitor dynamically the effects of ovariectomy on the bone density, cancellous bone formation and resorption, and bone mechenical strength.
