Highwall auger mining has resulted in severalbillion tons of stranded coal reserves in the Appalachiancoalfeilds of the U.S. The construction of low cost groutsderived from fluidized bed combustion ash, combined with newhighwall mining technology presents a method to recover thiscoal. Field trials conducted in Eastern Kentucky havedemonstrated that pumpable grouts can be emplaced in abandonauger holes with sufficient fluidity to completely fill the augerholes. Sufficient strengths have been achieved to allow themining of the coal located beyond the depth of augering.
