Improvement in solid/liquid separation has beenachieved coupling acoustic energy pulses with a fine meshscreen. The Acoustic/Screen Filter effects continuous separationand filtration of suspended particles from liquid with continuousflow of filtrate and continuous removal of solids concentrate. Anadditional positive effect is the killing of certain pathogenicbacteria. Various mechanical (displacement) energy sourceshave been used successfully, with resultant force near thethreshold of cavitation. Recurrent pressure oscillations serve to:(1) separate solid particles from liquid and reduce screen meshsurface tension; (2) prevent screen mesh blinding by cyclicbackwash of pressure oscillations, promoting continuouscleaning and filtration; and (3) kill/stress of pathogenic bacteria.
