The paper presents the novel approach to the sea bottom type recognition task, which uses fractal analysis of the bottom scattering impulse response. In the first stage of the method the SVD inverse filtering is used to obtain the scattering impulse response function of the bottom from the received echo envelope. In the second stage, the approximate value of fractal box dimension is calculated for the deconvolved bottom impulse response. The box dimension is then used as a signature of the bottom type. The proposed method was tested using sampled envelopes of echo signals from four types of sea bottom recorded during acoustic surveys in Lake Washington. The results show the recognition accuracy similar to that of other methods.
