A new organic tanning agent, amphoteric amphiphilic polymer containing reactive N-CH_2OH groups was specially designed and synthesized for chromium-free tanning. This paper reported briefly it's preliminary tanning properties to raw pigskin and vegetable-tanned leather and chrome-tanned leather. Results whowed that the polymeric tanning agent had a good ability to raise the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of raw skin or tanned leathers: 36 deg to raw skin (up to 85 deg), 26 deg to vegetable-tanned leather (totally up to 98 deg) and 3 approx 4 deg to chrome-tanned leather. The special structure of the polymer endowed the organic tanning agent with some additional properties: cationic groups could improve the dyeing, fat-liquoring and disinfecting properties of vegetable-tanned leather while the long alkyl residue improved the softness of the treated leathers. The above encouraging results indicated that the polymeric tanning agent could be a promising pre-tanning agent to produce "wet white" (will be reported in another paper), a promising retanning agent to improve the properties of chrome-tanned leather and vegetable-tanned leather and to make it possible or practical for using vegetable tanning material to produce light leather.
