In rough machining phase for removing the unnecessary material part for cutting a pocket designed with multiple islands, use of a relatively large cutter diameter is prepared for reducing time for rough machining. However in this case correct tool paths are required to void the overcut of contours of the pocket and islands Furthermore, a large diameter tool leaves some uncut areas and it is necessary for a CAM system to detect the uncut areas and generate machining data for removing them in asucceeding operation using a smaller diameter cutter. In a CAM system developed by the Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT) for machining of 2.5 dimension arbitrary shape pocket with islands, two functions: namely the tool pass generation withoutcausing interference and the uncut area detection, have been realized. In this paper, the CAM processing for the two functions are described.
