Study on the J-Integral Failure Assessment Curve of Heterogeneous Welded Joints

Based upon the J-integral parameter, plane strain elastic-plastic finite element analyses were carried out to calculate for failure assessment curve(FAC) for welded joints. The influences of strength mismatch of welded joints, the widths of welds and the crack sizes on FAC were discussed. The present results were compared with the current assessment curves of three levels, especially with advnaced level, proposed by BSI-PD6493-91. It was suggested that the mechanical properties of base metal or weld metal should be employed to calculate the parameter S_r for overmatching or undermatching joints, respectively, in order to simplify the numerical processes and engineering applications. In practice, this selection may even alter the safe or unsafe condition of an assessment.
