In this paper, a broad overlook is given with respect to the incorporation of environmental issues into the hardware development cycle. First, the state-of-the-art techniques w.r.t. green design are highlighted. These mainly focus on LCA or life cycle assessment. Secondly, the LCA-technique is assessed upon its added value for a design and development community. This results in some conclusions, related to a so-called eco-design methodology. It must be stressed that these conclusions are not drawn out of the blue, but they are based on some extensive pilot, projects.
