Coated cemented carbide tools and oxide ceramic tools were applied to high performance turning steel (ISO C45). Cutting performance was examined at the cutting speed from 100 to 1000 m/min. The feed rate and the depth of cut were set at 0.3mm/rev, 1.0 m/min respectively.The cutting force was rapidly decreased below 300 m/min, and little decreased over 300 m/min with increasing cutting speed.The crater wear was mainly promoted while the flank wear was little grew. The chip breaker was ware out at first, then the crater ware rapidly grew. This wear soon reached to the minor cutting edge, and the nose of the tool was finally broken away.The wear of the ceramic tools decreased at the same cutting length(2 km) with increasing cutting speed. The tool life is longer than the coated tools!.
