In order to ensure favorable aerodynamic performance of cascades at off-design points, a novel variational theory of multipoint inverse design of 2-D transonic cascades is developed herein, in which along each of the segments of the cascade airfoil contour the pressure distribution is specified at a corrsponding angle of attack and an artificial flow-oscillation concept is suggested. This theory is capable of extending to hybrid problems as well as to fully 3-D and/or rotational flows.
