The residual water content is an important index in the studies of undaturated soils. In this paper, the concept o residual state and the definition of residual water content in literature were reviewed. Since residual water content is influenced by amny facts, such as soil types, the equipment used for measuring SWCC, the models of SWCC and so on, the value of it is difficult to determine. Therefor, for engineering practice purpose, it is suggested to sue a familiar physical index, i.e., shrinkage limit, as an alternative to the residual water content. The feasibility of the replacement is verified through tests.
