The possibility of using andalusite incombination with other raw material components isexamined. This is for the realisation of high-levelmonolithic products to be used in metallurgy in thefield of steel making (i.e. ladles) and iron making(i.e. blast furnace iron runners).At temperatures in excess of 1000 deg C, mullite isknown to replace andalusite according to the reaction:3 Al_2O_3.SiO_2=>3 Al_2O_3.2SiO_2+SiO_2Laboratory test pieces of an andalusite basedself-flowing castable were prepared and fired tovarious temperatures above 1000 deg C. Physical andchemical features were examined.
