The inherent advantages of the sol-gel method are explored in the synthesis of zircon-based ceramic pigments. Zircon-Vannadium blue and praseodymium-yellow powders were produced from the respoective alkoxides and compared versus conventional ceramic pigments with respect to firing conditions for zircon-phase formation and colour development. The effects of mineralizers, aging time, and pigmenting substance on the phase composition and on the colour of the products were studied. It is shown that under appropriate conditons zircon-based pigments comparable to the commerical ones can be synthesized.
