This paper will investigate Rapid Tooling using a new LOM composite sheet on a Multifunctional Rapid Prototyping Machine(MRPM) at HKUST. Laminate Object Modeling(LOM) is a low cost rapid prototyping process suited for building of medium to large size prototypes nad models. A new inexpensive LOM composite with reduced thickness and low moisture induced distortion has been developed at HKUST. Coupled with a metal casting process nad new process software/hardware, this new composite can be used to manufacture metallic parts and prototypes. IN this study, process characteristics, roughness and properties fo prototypes and metallic tools built using this process are characterized and compared with conventional process.
