On-line commercial devices were tested and are now being used to measure slab width and length at the Burns Harbor No. 1 and No. 2 casters. Length is measured with contact wheels on the torch machines. Width is measured with lasers at the No. 2 caster an on-line statistical model is used to predict width for slabs that cannot be measured with lasers. Use of the on-line devices and the statistical model has resulted in an 87percent reduction in the number of off-width slabs and a 54percent reduction in the number of off-length slabs.
