Physical modeling of slag behavior at high rates of gas injection

With the advent of more intense ironmaking processes, like smelting-reduction, gas evolution in the slag may reach unprecedented levels. To study the fluid mechanics, gases were injected into a variety of room-temperature liquids at high superficial velocity (0.2 to 4.0 m/s). The void fraction was measured with a gamma ray densitometer. Churn-turbulent flow was observed in all systems. Drift-flux models proved useful in the analysis of the flow behavior and were extended to available smelter data.
