An investigation has been conducted to determine the effect of ultrasonic agitation on the rate of pickling of steel rods under simulated industrial conditions. Results show that ultrasonic agitation can increase pickling rates by a factor of three to four. In addition to this, surface finish is much improved. The results also suggest a possibility that the use of ultrasonic agitation can allow a reduction of solution temperature and acid concentration below the current operating conditions commonly used by the steel industry.
