As the authors indicate in their discussion, it is in the region of early condensate that the bulk of stress corrosion cracking occurs. For this reason, turbine engineers join plant chemists in their concern over steam purity. Plant chemists try to control steam cycle corrosion by maintaining high purity steam; however, turbine engineers go one step further. They want to know the specifics of contaminant concentration in the turbine. Presumably, this would enable them to improve turbine design in this region or develop appropriate blade coatings that would be able to resist attack by the most likely impurities.
